Moussavi: Iran Election Results Illegitimate

The leader of the Iranian opposition, Mir Hussein Moussavi, called the results of the recent Iranian presidential election illegitimate Monday, raising the stakes in an already tense battle for power, the Associated Press reports.

Moussavi said in a statement on his website that he was troubled by the "bitter, widespread distrust" being exhibited by the Iranian people toward the election result.

"It's not yet too late," he added. "It's our historic responsibility to continue our complaint and make efforts not to give up the rights of the people."

Iran's top electoral body, the Guardian Council, ratified the results of the presidential election earlier this week.
