Putin Says Jews May Have Been

Involved in U.S. Election Interference

Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested that Jews may have been behind alleged interference in the last U.S. presidential election.

In a combative interview with NBC News' Megyn Kelly, Putin was asked directly about Russian involvement in disrupting the election through cyberwarfare.

Putin replied, "Maybe they are not even Russians, but Ukrainians, Tatars, or Jews, but with Russian citizenship, which should also be checked; maybe they have dual citizenship or a green card; maybe the US paid them for this. How can you know that? I do not know either."

The U.S. law enforcement and intelligence community has unanimously concluded that there was a Russian cyber-intelligence operation intended to influence the U.S. election, especially by targeting the Hillary Clinton campaign.

While acknowledged as an authoritarian leader, Putin has by and large been seen as an exception to Russia's long history of antisemitic leaders. While not seen as exceptionally pro-Jewish, he is not viewed as hostile and Jewish life has blossomed in Russia under his rule.
