It May Be Purim, but This Is No Joke

Columnist Melanie Phillips Being Investigated by Police for Referring to Itamar Murderers as 'Savages'

-

Her most recent book is entitled "World Turned Upside Down" and that title has now become a reality for conservative British journalist Melanie Phillips.

In a blog post last Sunday, Phillips complained about mainstream media coverage of last weeks Itamar murders, noting how quickly the story came to be about "settlements" rather than the murder itself.

She wrote:

“So to the New York Times, it’s not the Arab massacre of a Jewish family which has jeopardised ‘peace prospects’ — because the Israelis will quite rightly never trust any agreement with such savages — but instead Israeli policy on building more homes, on land to which it is legally and morally entitled, which is responsible instead for making peace elusive. Twisted, and sick.”

WJD further covered it here.

Soon afterwards, an organization called Muslims4UK complained to the British Press Complaints Commission for, presumably, Phillips' referring to Arabs, as a class, as savages, and now, according to press reports, she is under criminal investigation.

No, this is not Iran, nor Syria, where you can get jailed for saying the wrong thing. It's Great Britain, land of John Stuart Mill and John Locke, foundational thinkers on the right to freedom of expression.

How the great have fallen.
