'Jewish Heritage Is American Heritage'

U.S. Vice President Biden praises Jewish contributions to America

Jewish culture and American culture are intertwined, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden said at a Jewish American Heritage Month reception, according to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.

Biden praised Jewish contributions to the civil rights movement, advances for women and gays and spoke of accomplishments by Jews in the arts and sciences.

"The Jewish people have contributed greatly to America," Biden said, adding that "no group has had such an outsized influence per capita."

Biden made his remarks at a reception in Washington organized by U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, who sponsored legislation that instituted Jewish American Heritage Month five years ago.

Each day this past month, the JTA has listed Jewish contributions in American society, which have been divided into light topics. For example, in a discussion about American Jewish novelist Philip Roth, it was noted that a bus tour showcasing his life is now available in Newark, N.J.

Another topic focused on American Jewish delis, and readers were urged to visit notable delis such as Katz's in New York and Langer's in Los Angeles. Some new places to nosh include Wise Sons in San Francisco, Stopsky's Delicatessen in Mercer Island, Washington, and Kenny & Zuke's (organic rye bread) in Portland, Oregon.
