IDF Retaliates After Rocket Attack on Southern Israel

A rocket was fired into southern Israel on Thursday, prompting an IDF retaliation.

The single projectile was intercepted by the Iron Dome defense system and caused no injuries. The IDF launched an air strike on Gaza that destroyed what the Times of Israel describes as an underground facility belonging to Hamas.

"One launch was detected from the Gaza Strip toward Israeli territory. It was intercepted by Iron Dome soldiers," the IDF said in a statement.

A spokesperson for the Eshkol Regional Council said, "There were no impacts inside a community. Searches are being conducted in the area."

The rocket came after a wave of incendiary balloon attacks on Israel's Gaza border communities, which resulted in a complete blockade of the waters around Gaza, preventing fishermen from accessing the sea.

"Due to the continued fires and flying of incendiary balloons from the Gaza Strip, it was decided this evening to impose a naval closure on the Strip until further notice," Israel's Defense Ministry said.
