Trump Orders Strike on Iran, Then Backs Off

President Donald Trump reportedly ordered a retaliatory strike on Iran in response to the downing of an American drone, but then suddenly pulled back.

According to the New York Times, the strike was to be a limited hit on radar installations and missile launchers, and was expected as late as 7pm EST on Thursday evening.

Planes and ships were deployed and ready to fire when the operation was called off.

Several administration officials wanted the strike, including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, National Security Adviser John Bolton, and CIA Director Gina Haspel.

However, the Times reports, "top Pentagon officials" warned that a strike could lead to uncontrollable military escalation.
