Tom Bosley and the 'Jewyness' of 'Happy Days'


The "Hollywood Jew" blog at LA's Jewish Journal tells us that Tom Bosley, the all-American dad for the television classic "Happy Days," who died yesterday at the age of 83, was in fact Jewish.

Even his Wikipedia entry treats his Jewishness as a surprising revelation: “Although well known for playing a Catholic priest—and numerous Protestants, Bosley was actually Jewish."

It turns out that Bosley grew up in Chicago and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Of course, Henry Winkler, who played the iconic "Fonz" character on the show, which ran from 1974 to 1984, is also Jewish. His parents immigrated from Germany to New York in 1939.
