A major escalation between Israel and Hamas in Gaza took place on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, with both sides hurtling towards another war.

The Times of Israel reports that over 200 rockets were fired at Israel in the last 24 hours, striking as far north as the city of Ashkelon.

One woman was seriously injured in a rocket strike on the southern town of Sderot, while another three were more lightly wounded. Homes and a factory were damaged.

Israel struck over a hundred terror targets in Gaza in retaliation for the rockets.

Residents of southern communities spent the night in bomb shelters.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened the security cabinet on Thursday morning to discuss further action.
