Abbas Buckles, Agrees to Talks With Israel

Haaretz reports that Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has succumbed to international pressure, agreeing in principle to hold indirect peace talks with Israel.

According to senior Palestinian sources, Abbas plans to consult Arab leaders before giving Washington his affirmative response in the coming days. U.S. special envoy to the Middle East George Mitchell will conduct the negotiations at a undetermined location.

Last week, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu expressed a desire to resume any level of dialogue with Abbas in hoping it would elevate the peace process.

"I have no problem with proximity talks or indirect negotiations. I look at this as a ladder that will enable the Palestinians to climb down from the tree, and as a corridor that will lead to high-level talks," he said.
