Bahrain Peace Deal a Building Block Toward Middle East Stability


Even liberal commentators are praising the upcoming diplomatic agreement between Bahrain and Israel.

Bahrain, along with the United Arab Emirates, is set to establish diplomatic relations with Israel at a Tuesday White House ceremony. David Ignatius of the Washington Post comments that Bahrain's move is a positive sign.

The significance of Bahrain’s action is partly that it wouldn’t have happened without the blessing of Saudi Arabia, which is joined by a causeway to the small Persian Gulf state. The Saudis have historically exercised what amounts to a veto over Bahraini policy. In this case, the Saudis silently endorsed their tiny neighbor’s decision, rather than vetoing it.

Ignatius adds that Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and possibly Morocco may be next in line to sign peace deals with Israel.
