Abbas Enraged by Calls to Annex Jordan Valley

The office of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas expressed anger on Wednesday at statements by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his electoral opponent Benny Gantz that they would annex the Jordan Valley.

The Times of Israel reports Abbas’ office saying, “Such statements totally undermine the foundations of the peace process — sending the region into a dangerous new phase of conflict and instability.”

The international community, the office said, must “stand firmly against these Israeli positions that threaten security, stability and world peace.”

The strategic valley currently constitutes Israel’s eastern security border and proposals for its annexation go back as far as the late 1960s.
