An Egyptian official told the Arabic-language daily Al-Hayat that U.S. President Barack Obama promised Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas a state within two years, Haaretz reports. Obama promised Abbas he would make a "great effort" to see a Palestinian state achieved, the official told the London-based newspaper. The paper also quoted the official saying that Israel had rejected special U.S. envoy George Mitchell's proposal to withdraw IDF forces from sections of the West Bank, as it did before the Second Intifada in 2000. Last week, Abbas bluntly told the Obama White House to impose a peace plan on the Middle East and rejected the idea of creating a state within temporary borders. |
