The United States is "determined" to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and is totally committed to Israel's security, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden told a Jerusalem press conference Tuesday, reports the Jerusalem Post. Following a morning meeting with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu that he called "productive," Biden said that progress occurs in the Middle East when "everyone knows there is simply no space ... between the U.S. and Israel when it comes to Israel's security." Biden is on a five-day visit to the Middle East that will see him meet with Palestinian and Jordanian leaders and make a speech at Tel Aviv University. Biden also met with Israel's President Shimon Peres Tuesday, writing in a guest book at the president's residence that “the bond between our two nations has been and will remain unshakable. Only together can we achieve lasting peace in the region.” Peres told Biden that Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, should face "total" international isolation."A man who calls for acts of terror, and who hangs people in the street ... he should be placed in his proper definition. He cannot go around almost like a cultural hero," Peres said. |
